課程大綱(Course Outline)

I.      Abstract

You have to write an abstract with 300 to 350 words in English, including heading (article’s title, author names, and journal name/volume/pages/year, followed by the names of presenter and commentator and presentation date), research summary (background section, hypothesis, study results, conclusions and significance) and references. The abstract and a PDF file of your article should be sent by e-mail to faculties and classmates by Tuesday of the week of presentation.

 

II.    Commentator

A commentator is invited from our faculties with expertise in the topic area of your selected article. It is the responsibility of the presenter to make sure the commentator will come on time in advance.

 

III.  Presentation

You have no more than 35 minutes to present your article in PowerPoint format. Please prepare your slides in the order of Background, Hypothesis, Methods/Results, and Discussion/Conclusion.  In addition, the presenter also needs to state “Why did I choose this paper?”

“The strength of this paper is ……” “The weakness of this paper is……”

 

IV. Language of presentation
First-year students: Mandarin is acceptable.
Second-year students: You must present your article in English.

 

V. Grading policy

      (1) Your attendance and punctuality (10%):
Any unexcused absence or lack of punctuality will result in lowered scores.

(2) Your abstract and presentation (80%):
You will receive the evaluation from teachers after your presentation.

(3) Your responsibility as an active participant (10%)

You must formulate questions relevant to at least 5 topics of your interest per semester.

(4) Other responsibility (bonus points)

You must attend at least 6 seminars presented by NCKU faculty and guest speakers.

 

VI. Progress report

(1) Second (or higher)-year students should prepare a poster and a 10 minutes oral presentation of your research work and 5 minutes for question at Oct. 1-2, 2016.

(2) You will receive the evaluation from teachers and students. Note that the presenter’s grade is averaged only from the teachers’ scores. Evaluation, based on the quality of:

a. Background section (20%)
b. Hypothesis (20%)
c. Study results (20%)
d. Conclusions and significance (20%)

e. Answer questions (20%)
