課程大綱 (Course Outline)
This course provides an overview of the contemporary Latin American short story in English translation, exploring its evolution and impact in world literature. We will examine the continuities and innovations that have shaped the genre, starting with Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, whose pioneering work modernized the short story form. Focus will then shift to key figures like Jorge Luis Borges and Juan Rulfo, whose innovations redefined the genre.
We will also spotlight the contributions of twentieth and twenty-first-century women writers who have enriched the tradition. Students will explore thematic and narrative techniques characteristic of Fantastic Literature, Magical Realism, and the Boom and Post-Boom periods, within their historical and cultural contexts. Featured authors include Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez, Clarice Lispector, Rosario Ferré, and Mariana Enríquez, among others.
To enhance English proficiency, students will engage in written assignments focused on critical analysis and argumentation, as well as oral presentations to build confidence in articulating complex ideas. Active participation is encouraged to foster a collaborative environment where students practice language skills while deeply engaging with the material.
By the end of the course, students will gain a deeper appreciation of Latin America’s cultural richness and regional diversity through the short story, and improve their English proficiency through literary analysis and interactive learning.
